Nocturne: Santa Maria della Salute, Venice

This 17th century Baroque church occupies the tip of the peninsula separating the Giudecca Canal and the Grand Canal and, along with Palladio’s Church of San Giorgio Maggiore, can be seen from the shoreline near Saint Mark’s Basilica. Architect Baldassare Longhena’s exuberant statement was built as a votive offering to victims of a devastating plague that took the lives of one third of Venice’s population.
