Petit Trianon, Versailles

Architect Ange-Jacques Gabriel’s Petit Trianon occupies a pivotal location in the Park of Versailles where the signature formal classical garden planning transitions to the more naturalistic English type, culminating in a pond bordered by Richard Mique’s Hamlet of the Queen for Marie Antoinette. This classical cube’s four facades respond ingeniously to four different landscapes varying in formality. This three-story façade fronts a long cobblestoned carriageway on axis with the Chateau and its surrounding parterre and gardens.
