Panorama: Evening at Mont St. Michel

At all times of day, in all types of weather, Mont St. Michel is a timeless landmark of faith. The low-lying countryside that surrounds the Mont is a perfect companion for the island. Mud flats, farms and grassy fields with grazing sheep provide a picturesque foreground for the soaring monastery that surmounts the rocky base. As he did at Notre Dame de Paris, 19th century architect Viollet-le-Duc embellished the Mont with great skill.
